The work, works on you, more than you work on it

Work builds you up

The work you do transforms you, more than you might think.
Let me explain.

Challenging Common Narratives

Many of us grow up thinking work is a chore, something to dread. This mindset, which sees work merely as a means to money, misses out on work’s transformative power.

Another Approach

I challenge that perspective. Work isn’t just a task. It’s an ally. Through work, you grow. You hone skills, build resilience, and mold character. Put simply: More work equals more growth.

You’re not just paid for hours

It’s not about clocking hours. It’s about the value you offer. And value isn’t necessarily tied to the time spent. Your skills determine your value.

The value equation:

Value = time spent working x skills.

An Example

A cashier might earn a minimum wage, while a neurosurgeon makes that in a few hours. Why? Skills. Because the neurosurgeon has developed skills. Almost no one can do a neurosurgical operation, but almost everybody can work in a supermarket. Better and rarer skills, mean more value.

How to develop skills

Want to gain skills? Work. As you are working, the work works on you to give you the skills. The neurosurgeon, for instance, put in years of study and practice (often without pay) to master his craft.

The Best Part

The catch

Choose your work wisely. I suggest to search for something that meets the following:

  • It is interesting to you
  • It develops a valuable skill

Let work shape you

Starting out, most of us lack skills. But we have talents. Work turns talent into skill. So, dive into projects. Even if they don’t pay much at first. Seek work and let it build you. As your skills grow, so does the value you provide to the world. Then, the world will provide back to you.

*Note: This isn’t just about money. This principle applies across life, from health and relationships to character. The financial analogy is just easier to conceptualize.
